Keynote on ‘Speculative Design and Biohacking’ at BioFabbing Convergence, CERN, Switzerland

Photography by David Kong

Giving a short talk on Speculative Design and how it can relate to field of DIY Biology. Drawing on from a list of manifesto by Dunne and Raby, called ‘a/b’, the talk compares and contrasts their philosophy of design with how biohackers can use biological materials and processes in a similar way. If biohackers can imagine themselves as designers in their own right, designing things not with conventional materials such as plastic, wood, metal etc but that of biological materials such as DNA, proteins and cells, and also thinking about creating forms and functions on a microscopic scale (eg. gene sequences leading to function), what are the possibilities this would create?
